Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller is an episodic point-and-click adventure game from Phoenix Online Studios that puts you in the footsteps of a FBI Agent with special cognitive abilities.
The player takes on the role of Erica Reed, a FBI agent in Boston who has the ability to peer into an object’s past by touching it. Reliving the past through the objects at a crime scene is equally a blessing and a curse for Erica. While they allow her to learn more about the events that had transpired at the scene of a crime, they also bring nightmares rushing back into her mind. Utilizing her cognitive abilities is imperative however, as they greatly help in her ability to identify the most subtle clues that would have otherwise gone unperceived by the unaided eye. Moving forward in Cognition is as much about solving the mysteries at the crime scene as it is Erica fighting to keep her sanity.
While Cognition’s gameplay certainly keeps you engaged, a lot can be said of its style and presentation. The artistic graphic-novel inspired graphics are clear and colorful which help to bring out the details in the environments that you are searching for clues. The dialogue is also fully voiced, which is a great touch for a game with such an emphasis on its story. Cognition’s fantastic sense of atmosphere lures you into its dark adventure and keeps you guessing at every twist and turn. Make no mistake, although Cognition’s bright and artistic art style may suggest otherwise, this is not a story for the faint of heart.
