Here we go again. Damn aliens, always invading our space. What is it about Earth that gets them all worked up? I don’t know. What I do know however is that they are at it again in Retrobooster, and its your job to send them packing!
After evil aliens invade the Milky Way, you are left with a difficult choice. To fight, or not to fight? Well, I think we all know the answer to that! You are the pilot of an extremely nimble starship and are responsible for saving stranded miners that have been left wandering around asteroids, shooting flares into the air for help. That sounds easy, doesn’t it? Well, check your ego at the door because this starship legitimately requires skill to fly.
My first attempt to save a few stranded miners resulted in me essentially crashing my ship into the ground infront of them. Not the best strategy, no doubt. I gathered my senses and tried again. This time, I fared better and didn’t crash into the ground. I did however, crash into the survivors and that pretty much ended their dream of making it home. As I started to get a feel for the starship’s thrusters and learned to control the ship, things started to fall into place. I was saving miners! I was shooting aliens! I was soaring through space at insane speeds! I was still doing a lot of crashing and burning but hey, that’s part of the fun, right?
Outside of crashing and lighting survivors on fire with your thrusters, the landscapes of Retrobooster are very pretty and pleasing to look at. Color accents throughout the world give the game a very interesting look, as the darkness of space oftentimes contrasts the bright colors of barriers, stars, and enemy ships on fire. Cooperative play looks promising, as well as the multiplayer deathmatch modes which I was unfortunately unable to play for preview, but I can see being a lot of fun in zero gravity. So far Retrobooster is an interesting and unique experience, and I am looking forward to playing to final code when its released later this year.
I suggest that you take a look at Retrobooster on Steam today, because you can never have enough old-school space shooter in your life!
